Design As Democracy

One of the primary political/social questions of our time is: How can we design places that fulfill urgent needs of the community, achieve environmental justice, and inspire long-term stewardship? The fundamental answer is that by bringing community members to the table, we open up the possibility of exchanging ideas meaningfully and transforming places powerfully. Collaboration like this is hands-on democracy in action. It's up close. It's personal. For decades, participatory design practices have helped enliven neighborhoods and promote cultural understanding. Yet, many designers still rely on the same techniques that were developed in the 1950s and 60s. These approaches offer predictability, but hold waning promise for addressing current and future design challenges. "Design as Democracy: Techniques for Collective Creativity" is specifically intended to help community members and activists to reinvigorate democratic design, providing inspiration, techniques, and case stories for a wide range of contexts. Deftly compiled and edited by six leading practitioners and academics in the field of participatory design, with nearly 50 contributors from around the world, "Design as Democracy" shows how to design with communities in empowering and effective ways. The flow of the book's nine chapters reflects the general progression of community design process, while also encouraging readers to search for ways that best serve their distinct needs and the culture and geography of diverse places. Each chapter presents a series of techniques around a theme, from approaching the initial stages of a project, to getting to know a community, to provoking political change through strategic thinking. Readers may approach the book as they would a cookbook, with recipes open to improvisation, adaptation, and being created anew. Impressively 'user friendly' in organization and presentation, "Design as Democracy: Techniques for Collective Creativity" is an extraordinary and 'real world practical' read that is unreservedly recommended for both community and academic library Social Science, Political Science, and Contemporary Social Issues collections. It should be noted for personal reading lists that "Design as Democracy: Techniques for Collective Creativity" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $23.99).

I Will Not Fear: My Story of a Lifetime of Building Faith Under Fire is the autobiography of author Melba Pattillo Beals, of one of the black students chosen to integrate Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. She was only 15 years old when she bravely attended the institution in spite of bullying, hatred, and death threats. Her faith in God sustained her through a lifetime of challenges. She married a white man who loved her and who carried no racial prejudice - yet cultural (not racial!) differences led to their divorce; he wanted a stay-at-home housewife, while she longed for a college education and a career. She pursued both as a single mother, and became a writer and an NBC television news reporter. Her story is one of resourcefulness, courage, and a bedrock of trust in God. I Will Not Fear is highly recommended for both public library collections and personal reading lists.

A follow-up to the enormously popular and informative guide "The Coffee Break Screenwriter" (9781615932429, $26.95), The Coffee Break Screenwriter Breaks the Rules is about writing a script for television, theater, or cinema ten minutes at a time - and about making one's script stand out from the rest by breaking the major rules of screenwriting. But rules exist for a good reason, and shouldn't broken thoughtlessly - it's important to understand why the rule exists, and why breaking it in a specific manner can punch up one's work. "The safe writer is the unemployed writer. He or she keeps getting the comment, 'Interesting, but not for us.' You want to turn this around to 'Fascinating. We don't have anything like it!'" The Coffee Break Screenwriter Breaks the Rules is a "must-have" for every aspiring or professional screenwriter, highly recommended.

The American writer (both real and fictitious, famous and obscure) has traditionally been situated on the margins of society, an outsider looking in. From The Great Gatsby's Nick Carraway to the millions of bloggers today, writers are generally seen as onlookers documenting the human condition. Yet their own collective story has largely gone untold. Tracing the role of the writer in the United States over the last century, "The American Writer: Literary Life in the United States from the 1920s to the Present" by Lawrence R. Samuel (an independent scholar and a published author of works on 20th century American cultural history) describes how those who use language as a creative medium have held a special place in our collective imagination. An inherently fascinating and impressively informative study that is augmented for academia with the inclusion of a three page Bibliography and a three page Index, "The American Writer" will prove to be particularly interesting to the current generation of writers, and should be considered a 'must' for inclusion into both community and academic library 20th Century American Literature and Writing/Publishing collections.

It is in the very nature of human beings that we are resistant to change. This is especially true in the organizations we create. Organization Development initiatives, Leadership Development programs, and Business Transformation plans all founder too often on our resistance and reluctance, on the tendency of people and things to slip back to how they were before. For a long time, Systems Thinkers have understood that the problem lies with our failure to look at the surrounding organizational structures and dynamics, at the wider picture, at the context. In "Context, Context, Context: How Our Blindness to Context Cripples Even the Smartest Organizations", Barry Oshry draws his many years of experience and expertise to deftly explain the nature of the problem with our organizational structures, and the ways in which we can dissolve the problem. "Context, Context, Context" is written in play-form: a simple briefing conversation between a recently hired team member and the Chief Contextual Thinker for a Business Consultancy firm. They discuss the change initiative they are running for a key client. The conversational format allows Oshry to introduce the relevant theory clearly and in sequence, while addressing questions and misunderstandings as they arise. The result is a guide to Systems Thinking for Organizations that's as short, clever, engaging, bright, and helpful as any business book you have ever picked up. "Context, Context, Context" is a story with the potential to transform any organization and it is written for anyone interested in the workings and structures of human organizations: from Board Directors and Chief Executives, through Middle Managers to interested workers. Exceptionally well written, organized and presented, "Context, Context, Context" is unreservedly recommended for personal, professional, corporate, community, and academic library Systems Thinking, Organization Development, Sociology, and Business Management collections and supplemental studies reading lists.

Longer life expectancy and increasing intellectual capital have transformed our notion of the golden years. When Social Security became law back in the 1930s the average life expectancy was a full decade lower than it is today. One of the unintended consequences if that with an average life expectancy in the high 70s many (especially among the Babyboomer generation) are just not ready for a life without work; fear outliving their money; fear outliving their meaning. That's why Andy Raub has written "The Encore Curve: Retire with a Life Plan that Excites You" as a thoroughly 'user friendly' instruction manual and guide with which anyone can create the retirement of their dreams -- what Raub calls 'a memorable encore'. "The Encore Curve" examines two crucial questions: "Now what am I going to do?" and "Will I have enough money?" and guides the reader toward the answers, with unique coaching methods to help them find and fund retirement goals. Part workbook, part personal journey, "The Encore Curve" will equip the both emotionally and economically to define the next phase of their life, develop and then pursue a powerful vision for their future (regardless of their present age), with Raub's "Peace of Mind Investor Process". Using simple, insightful exercises and worksheets, "The Encore Curve shows how to: Determine priorities; Maximize income; Design fulfilling, worry-free retirement; Refocus life by putting first things first; Organize finances and build a spending plan; Assess risk and recovery options; Avoid mistakes by making adjustments to the new rules of the game: Manage finite funds in the face of increasing costs; Devise a contingency plan for sudden life changes; Take advantage of retirement's opportunities and challenges; Match money to dreams; Make the future bigger than the past. Impressively informative, exceptionally well written, thoroughly accessible in organization and presentation, "The Encore Curve" is unreservedly recommended, especially for senior center, community, and academic library Money Management & Retirement Planning instructional reference collections. Schreen Schooled: Two Veteran Teachers Expose How Technology Overuse Is Making Our Kids Dumber is not an anti-technology book, but rather a cautionary expose against the overuse of technology in the classroom. Yes, it's important that young people know how to use computers and smartphones, but in the vast majority of cases, they learn these skills on their own - and adding more laptops and smartphones to the classroom creates more distractions and interruptions than benefits. Veteran teachers Joe Clement and Matt Miles reveal that too much screen saturation can induce cognitive and social deficits in young people, taking away from the face-to-face interaction that builds social skills, replacing the physical activity that cultivates good health, and eroding the mental focus needed to master challenging subjects. Even things like requiring e-mailed homework submission, or forcing students to use cumbersome (or even outdated!) electronic textbooks add unneeded barriers to the crucial goals of education, and teaching critical thinking skills. Screen Schooled deserves the careful consideration of educational professionals everywhere, and is highly recommended.

1960 saw the dawn of an era of unprecedented innovation and development in farm machinery. It was a period of rapid technical advancement, that produced machines which are the mainstay of the current very buoyant vintage tractor restoration movement. At the start of the decade, spark-ignition Standard Fordson tractors still occasionally required repair; by the end of the decade, the Fordson Diesel Major had been replaced by the Ford 1000 series. The history of these iconic brands is well-known. "Oily Oily Hands and the Smell of Diesel: Tales of a Ford Dealer Engineer in the 1960s" by David Harris (who has spent 50 years working in agricultural machinery repair in Sussex for two different Ford Tractor dealers) gives an alternative view-the inside story of the agricultural machinery repair trade. An entertaining, informative, and personal account of his time spent at a Ford main tractor dealership, working on Ford, Fordson, County, Roadless and Muirhill tractors, Chaseside loaders, Claas combines, and New Holland and Jones balers, amongst others, David Harris deftly describes the technical challenges in detail, and tells of the ups and downs of life in the workshop and out in the field. Exceptionally well-written, organized, and replete with historical photographs, "Oily Hands and the Smell of Diesel" is a simply 'must-read' for anyone who is or was involved in the machinery industry, anyone looking to restore or repair vintage agricultural machinery, and anyone with a general interest in farming and machinery history. While highly and unreservedly recommended for both community and academic library Agricultural History, Automotive History, and Farm Machinery History collections, it should be noted for personal reading lists that "Oily Hands and the Smell of Diesel" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $23.70).

Thieves' Road: The Black Hills Betrayal and Custer's Path to Little Bighorn chronicles the history of General George Armstrong Custer's lesser-known expedition to the Black Hills of South Dakota in 1874, and how it led to the Battle of Little Bighorn two years later. Why was Custer's investigation of the Black Hills so important? Because Custer discovered gold, at a time when America was suffering its worst economic depression since its founding, which in turn sparked a gold rush of white prospectors into the sacred lands of the Lakota (also known as Sioux) Native Americans. This set the stage for bloody conflict, during the Grant administration when the "peace policy" with Native American tribes involved forcibly settling them on reservations, and the federal Indian Bureau was horrendously corrupt. Notes, a bibliography, and an index round out this expertly researched yet thoroughly accessible historical chronicle. Thieves' Road brings the dark and greedy side of American history to vivid life, and is highly recommended especially for public and college library collections.

Pledging allegiance, singing the "Star-Spangled Banner", wearing a flag pin -- these are all symbolic markers of modern patriotism, emblems that announce the devotion of American citizens to their country. Most of these nationalistic performances were formulized during the early twentieth century and driven to new heights by the panic surrounding national identity during World War I. In "To Become an American: Immigrants and Americanization Campaigns of the Early Twentieth Century", Leslie A. Hahner ( Associate Professor of Communication at Baylor University) argues that, in part, the Americanization movement engendered the transformation of patriotism during this period. Americanization was a massive campaign designed to fashion immigrants into perfect Americans, that is, those who would be loyal in word, deed, and heart. The larger outcome of this widespread movement was a dramatic shift in the nation's understanding of Americanism. Employing a rhetorical lens to analyze the visual and aesthetic practices of Americanization, Professor Hahner contends that Americanization not only tutored students in the practices of citizenship but also created a normative visual metric that modified how Americans would come to understand, interpret, and judge their own patriotism and that of others. An original work of seminal scholarship, "To Become an American" is enhanced for academia with the inclusion of forty-eight pages of Notes, a twenty-eight page Bibliography, and a nine page Index. While unreservedly recommended for both community and academic library collections, it should be noted for the personal reading lists of students, academics, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the subject that "To Become an American" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $31.95).

The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, also known as the Order of Solomon's Temple, the Knights Templar or simply as Templars, were a Catholic military order recognized in 1139 by papal bull Omne Datum Optimum of the Holy See. The order was founded in 1119 and active from about 1129 to 1312. The Knights Templar did not write about themselves, or keep diaries. However, the records of the Templars' estates tell us how they lived -- from the buildings they lived in and their furnishings, to the books and ornaments in their chapels, and their clothes and crockery. These early fourteenth-century records tell us about the men and women who worked for the Templars on their lands and in their houses, their tenants, and the people who owed them money. We can see what animals they kept, from fine warhorses to hard-working plough animals, alongside cattle, pigs, and vast flocks of sheep. Drawing on these records, along with archaeological evidence and the Templars' own regulations, "The Everyday Life of the Templars: The Knights Templar at Home" by Helen J. Nicholson (who teaches at the University of Cardiff and is a leading international researcher on the history of the Knights Templar) sets out to reconstruct how the Templars lived from day to day, in both the Middle East and Western Europe. The result is a fascinating insight into the everyday lives of these pious men, who were not powerful nobles or churchmen, yet held great influence in medieval Europe. An impressively informative and seminal work of compelling scholarship, "The Everyday Life of the Templars" is unreservedly recommended for personal, community, and academic library History Collections in general, and Knights Templar supplemental studies reading lists in particular.

Bethlehem is so suffused with history and myth that it feels like an unreal city even to those who call it home. For many, Bethlehem remains the little town at the edge of the desert described in Biblical accounts. Today, the city is hemmed in by a wall and surrounded by forty-one Israeli settlements and hostile settlers and soldiers. In the pages of "Bethlehem: Biography of a Town", novelist, playwright, and screenwriter Nicholas Blincoe tells the town's history through the visceral experience of living there, taking his readers through its stone streets and desert wadis, its monasteries, aqueducts, and orchards to show the city from every angle and era. Blincoe's portrait of Bethlehem sheds light on one of the world's most intractable political problems, and he maintains that if the long thread winding back to the city's ancient past is severed, the chances of an end to the Palestine-Israel conflict will be lost with it. An impressively informative and inherently fascinating read from cover to cover, "Bethlehem: Biography of a Town" is an extraordinary and exceptionally well written, organized and presented history -- and one that is unreservedly recommended for both community and academic library collections. It should be noted for personal reading lists that "Bethlehem: Biography of a Town" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $16.99).

The XI Corps served in the Army of the Potomac for just twelve months (September 1862-August 1863), during which it played a pivotal role in the critical battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Thereafter, the corps hastened westward to reinforce a Union army in besieged Chattanooga, and marched through brutal December weather without adequate clothing, shoes, or provisions to help rescue a second Northern army under siege in Knoxville, Tennessee. Despite its sacrifices in the Eastern campaigns and successes in Tennessee, the reputation of the XI Corps is one of cowardice and failure. James S. Pula sets the record straight in his two-volume study Under the Crescent Moon: The XI Corps in the American Civil War, 1862-1864. "Under the Crescent Moon: From the Defenses of Washington to Chancellorsville, 1862-1863" draws extensively on primary sources and allows the participants to speak directly to readers. The result is a comprehensive personalized portrait of the men who fought in the "unlucky" XI Corps, from the difficulties it faced to the accomplishments it earned. As the author demonstrates time and again, the men of the XI Corps were good soldiers unworthy of the stigma that has haunted them to this day. A long overdue study, "Under the Crescent Moon with the XI Corps in the Civil War: From the Defenses of Washington to Chancellorsville, 1862-1863" by James S. Pula (Professor of History at Purdue University Northwest) will stand as the definitive history of the XI Corps. While unreservedly recommended as an essential addition to both community and academic library American Civil War collections, it should be noted for the personal reading lists of dedicated Civil War buffs that "Under the Crescent Moon with the XI Corps in the Civil War: From the Defenses of Washington to Chancellorsville, 1862-1863" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $20.97).

William Edmondson "Grumble" Jones (May 3, 1824 - June 5, 1864) stands among the most notable Southwest Virginians to fight in the American Civil War. The Washington County native graduated from Emory & Henry College and West Point. As a lieutenant in the "Old Army" between service in Oregon and Texas, he watched helplessly as his wife drowned during the wreck of the steamship Independence. He resigned his commission in 1857. Resuming his military career as a Confederate officer, he mentored the legendary John Singleton Mosby. His many battles included a clash with George Armstrong Custer near Gettysburg. An internal dispute with his commanding general, J.E.B. Stuart, resulted in Jones's court-martial conviction in 1863. Following a series of campaigns in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, he returned to the Shenandoah Valley and died in battle in 1864, leaving a mixed legacy. Being resurrected from an undeserved obscurity for a new generation of appreciative Civil War buffs, "William Edmondson "Grumble" Jones: The Life of a Cantankerous Confederate" by Civil War historian and biographer James Buchanan Ballard is unreservedly recommended for community, college, and university library American Civil War History collections and supplemental studies lists. Henry Green was the pen name of Henry Vincent Yorke (29 October 1905 - 13 December 1973), an English author best remembered for the novels Party Going, Living and Loving. He published a total of nine novels between 1926 and 1952. "Doting" was the last of Henry Green's novels, and as its title would suggest, a story of yearning and lusting and aging in which a wife and a brash young woman run hilarious circles around a hapless hardworking civil servant suddenly seized by long-dormant urges. "Doting" stands out from the rest of Green's work in its brilliant, experimental use of dialogue. Green was fascinated with the extravagance, ambiguity, absurdity, and unintentional implications and consequences of everyday human communication, and in "Doting" language slips and slides the better to reveal the absurdity and persistence of love and desire, exciting laughter while troubling the heart. An inherently fascinating and engaging read from cover to cover, "Doting" is unreservedly recommended for both community and academic library Literary Fiction collections. The story of America's "War on Drugs" usually begins with Richard Nixon or Ronald Reagan. In "Containing Addiction: The Federal Bureau of Narcotics and the Origins of America's Global Drug War" by Matthew R. Pembleton (a writer and historian based in the Washington, DC region who also teaches at American University), argues that its origins instead lie in the years following World War II, when the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (the country's first drug control agency, established in 1930) began to depict drug control as a paramilitary conflict and sent agents abroad to disrupt the flow of drugs to American shores. U.S. policymakers had long viewed addiction and organized crime as profound domestic and trans-national threats. Yet World War II presented new opportunities to implement drug control on a global scale. Skeptical of public health efforts to address demand, the Federal Bureau of Narcotics believed that reducing the global supply of drugs was the only way to contain the spread of addiction. In effect, America applied a foreign policy solution to a domestic social crisis, demonstrating how consistently policymakers have assumed that security at home can only be achieved through hegemony abroad. The result is a drug war that persists into the present day. With the dramatic and horrific rise of opioid addition in this country it is useful in assessing America's drug policies to be aware of the political and social history the first created and then reinforced a 'war on drugs' mentality, policy, and consequences. A seminal work of outstanding researched-based social policy history, "Containing Addiction" is an impressively informed and informative study that is unreservedly recommended for governmental, community and academic library Social Issues collections in general, and Federal Drug Policy supplemental studies lists in particular. It should be noted for the personal reading lists of students, academics, governmental policy makers, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the subject that "Containing Addiction" is also available in a paperback edition (9781625343161, $36.95).

Stigma is a mark of disgrace or infamy; a stain or reproach, as on one's reputation. A simple two-syllable word, it carries the weight of negative and often unfair beliefs that we hold about those who are different from us. Stigmas lock people into stereotyped boxes and deny us all the right to be our authentic and whole selves. Dr. Pernessa Seele is a longtime public health activist who started one of the first AIDS education programs in the 1980s, has crafted a proven method to address stigma. "Stand Up to Stigma: How We Reject Fear and Shame" is powerful presentation in which Dr. Seele confronts stereotype development, shows how to undo the processes and effects of stigma, and explains how we can radically change cultural thinking on the individual, interpersonal, and societal levels to put an end to stigmatization once and for all. With a deftly crafted message that is both timely and timeless, "Stand Up to Stigma" is an impressively useful contribution to our current national dialogue and should be a part of every community and academic library collection. It should be noted for personal reading lists that "Stand Up to Stigma" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $17.95) and is also available as a complete and unabridged audio book (Dreamscape Audio, 9781520082240, $29.99, CD).

Surrogacy: A Human Rights Violation
Dr. Renate Klein
Spinifex Press

9781925581034 $19.95 pbk / $8.69 Kindle amazon.com

Author Dr. Renate Klein, a co-founder of FINRRAGE (Feminist International Network of Resistance to Reproductive and Genetic Engineering), makes a firm case for why legal surrogacy and its associated fertility industries are morally unconscionable. Surrogacy: A Human Rights Violation fiercely criticizes the practice of surrogacy - that is, having a woman carry and give birth to a baby, in order to serve the reproductive needs of another person or persons, who will become the child's parent(s). Both "commercial surrogacy", where the surrogate mother is paid, and "altruistic surrogacy", where the surrogate mother is not compensated, are subject to the harshest scrutiny. Modern IVF technology has made it possible for surrogate mothers to carry children that are not genetically related to them, but the process of pregnancy is not so easily distanced or sanitized. Surrogate pregnancy (which almost always ends in Cesarian section) has serious risks to the physical and mental health of the surrogate, and if the unborn child is found to be defective it is usually aborted. The practice of surrogacy, Dr. Renate Klein argues, is abhorrent because it commodifies women's bodies (much like prostitution), pushes impoverished and vulnerable women to be used for money, risks harm to the surrogate (there have been recorded cases where the surrogate died), ignores the emotional bond between a pregnant woman and her developing child (regardless of whether they share genes), and deprives the baby of the right to be raised by its birth mother. Regardless of the reader's personal stance on the matter, Surrogacy: A Human Rights Violation deserves extended study and discussion, and is highly recommended for social issues shelves.

When dozens of holes appeared in a patient's femur alongside his hip prosthesis, experts were baffled as such a phenomenon had never been seen before. Over the first four decades of total hip surgery, the severe bone destruction multiplied, crippling many thousands of patients. Eventually identified as "periprosthetic osteolysis", this devastating disease affected over 1 million patients and was the leading cause of failure in total hip surgery. While total hip surgery dramatically reversed severe arthritis of the hip, the same operation simultaneously created a relentless 'particle generator' in the body. Ironically, in the effort to do good, doctors were simultaneously doing major harm. In "Vanishing Bone: Conquering a Stealth Disease Caused by Total Hip Replacements", Dr. William H. Harris (Alan Gerry Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Emeritus at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts) takes readers on a detective adventure in contemporary medical science, from the identification of the cause of the disease through the complex process of affecting its cure. Dr. Harris and his colleagues played an important role in solving the mystery of this disease, pointing to its molecular biology, recognizing the unusual wear of the prostheses, and ultimately developing a new material for use in the manufacture of hip implants. With more than 6 million people walking on this stable, low-wear material, the disease has been virtually eliminated among those with total hip replacements worldwide. Diseases are rarely observed, revealed, and eliminated in one lifetime. "Vanishing Bone" tells the informative and inherently fascinating story of one such disease through an engaging account of scientific and medical innovation. While unreservedly recommended for both community and academic library Health/Medicine collections, it should be noted for personal reading lists that "Vanishing Bone" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $14.99).

Rumrill, Jr. (School of Lifespan Development and Educational Sciences, Kent State University) and James L. Bellini (Department of Counseling and Human Services, Syracuse University) provides a complete course of instruction in the basics that researchers and academics would need to begin conducting a research investigation in the field of psychological counseling. "Research In Rehabilitation Counseling" was written as a primary text for graduate level students and practitioners concerning the role of research in contemporary rehabilitation counseling. "Research In Rehabilitation Counseling" provides a comprehensive overview of the philosophical, ethical, methodological, and analytic fundamentals of social science research, as well as to specify aspects of rehabilitation research that distinguish it from scientific inquiry in other helping professions. This new third edition of "Research In Rehabilitation Counseling" has been thoroughly revised to accurately reflect the variation and wealth of research methodologies used in contemporary rehabilitation counseling research more than 300 new references have been added. Most of the research examples cited were published in peer-reviewed rehabilitation counseling journals over the past decade, and these examples represent the current status of research methods as well as the most relevant contemporary topic areas of research and scholarship in the field. Accordingly, "Research In Rehabilitation Counseling" may be used both as a research textbook and as a general introduction to the current scholarship. Because "Research In Rehabilitation Counseling" was written as an introductory research methods textbook for graduate students in rehabilitation counseling, it's primary focus is on the role of readers as professional consumers of rehabilitation research. The Age of Monopoly Capital

9781583676523, $59.00, HC, 544pp, www.amazon.com

Paul A. Baran and Paul M. Sweezy were two of the leading Marxist economists of the twentieth century. Their seminal work, "Monopoly Capital: An Essay on the American Economic and Social Order" (published in 1966, some two years after Baran's death), was in many respects the culmination of fifteen years of correspondence between the two, from 1949 to 1964. During those years, Baran, a professor of economics at Stanford, and Sweezy, a former professor of economics at Harvard, then co-editing Monthly Review in New York City, were separated by three thousand miles. Their intellectual collaboration required that they write letters to one another frequently and, in the years closer to 1964, almost daily. Their surviving correspondence consists of some one thousand letters. The letters selected for inclusion into "The Age of Monopoly Capital" span from 1949 to 1964 and illuminate not only the development of the political economy that was to form the basis of Monopoly Capital, but also the historical context (the McCarthy Era, the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis) in which these thinkers were forced to struggle. Not since Marx and Engels carried on their epistolary correspondence has there has been a collection of letters offering such a detailed look at the making of a prescient critique of political economy -- and at the historical conditions from which that critique was formed. Informative, insightful, unique, "The Age of Monopoly Capital" is enhanced for academia with the inclusion of a Chronology, a Bibliography, a Glossary of Names, and an Index, making it an ideal and unreservedly recommended addition to both community and academic library Economics collections. It should be noted for personal reading lists of economics students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the subject that "The Age of Monopoly Capital" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $59.00).

In 1942, Leo Marks left his father's famous bookshop, 84 Charing Cross Road, and went off to fight the war. He was twenty-two. Soon recognized as a cryptographer of genius, he became head of communications at the Special Operations Executive (SOE), where he revolutionized the code making techniques of the Allies and trained some of the most famous agents dropped into occupied Europe, including "the White Rabbit" and Violette Szabo. Architecture and design currently play a minor role in the design and construction of industrial building types, especially waste-to-energy facilities. Through comparing the well-established waste-to-energy industries in Sweden with less established engagements in the northeast of the United States, opportunities and lessons are revealed. "Architecture and Waste: A (Re)planned Obsolescence" presents a refreshed, design-led approach to waste-to-energy (WTE) plants, reflecting work done at Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD). Architecture and design currently play a minor role in the design and construction of industrial building types, especially waste-to-energy facilities. Architects have a critically important role to play in integrating waste-to-energy plants physically and programmatically within their urban or suburban contexts, as well as potentially lessening the generally negative perception of energy recovery plants. A meticulous work of scholarship by the architectural team of Hanif Kara, Leire Asensio Villoria, and Andreas Georgoulias, "Architecture and Waste: A (Re)planned Obsolescence" is an especially recommended addition to professional, college, and university library Contemporary Architectural Issues collections and supplemental studies reading lists.

"Instruments of Battle: The Fighting Drummers and Buglers of the British Army from the Late 17th Century to the Present Day" examines in detail the development and role of the British Army's fighting drummers and buglers, from the time of the foundation of the army up to the present day. While their principal weapon of war was the drum and bugle (and the fife), these men and boys were not musicians as such but fighting soldiers who took their place in the front line. The origins of the drum and bugle in the Classical Period and the later influence of Islamic armies are examined, leading to the arrival of the drum and fife in early Tudor England. The story proper picks up post-English Civil War and the drum's period of supremacy through much of the eighteenth century army; certain myths as to its use are dispelled. The bugle rapidly superseded the drum for field use in the nineteenth century until developments on the battlefield consigned these instruments largely to barrack-life and the parade-ground. But there are surprising examples of the use of the bugle in the field through both World Wars and the story is brought up to most recent times and relegation to an almost exclusively ceremonial role. This is all set against a background of campaigns, battles, changing tactical methods and the difficult processes of command and control on the battlefield. Also covered is a relevant comparison with other armies, particularly American and French. The wider roles of drummers, especially, as battlefield heralds, as adjuncts to recruiting and dispensers of punishment are considered, as well as the other roles they and buglers assumed, out of practicability, on the modern battlefield. Stories of the drummers and buglers themselves provide social context to their place in the army. A unique and informative body of seminal scholarship and an invaluable contribution to military history collections and supplemental studies reading lists, "Instruments of Battle: The Fighting Drummers and Buglers of the British Army from the Late 17th Century to the Present Day" is an extraordinarily and inherently fascinating read from first page to last.

In July 1969, while the world was expectant about the upcoming first manned landing on the moon, two little-known Central American States crossed sabers in what was derogatorily coined by the media as 'The Soccer War'. Far from a simple out-of-hand sports passion, this conflict had its complicated origins back in the early 20th century when the North American companies United Fruit and its rival, Standard Fruit, operated in Honduras -- and both deemed it necessary to import workers from El Salvador, since the locals were insufficient in numbers. What followed was an exodus of more than 300,000 Salvadorans who settled in Honduras which, for a while, the latter country's government saw this as beneficial. That is until the early 1960s, when political changes and the liberalization of the region's commerce through the Common Market Treaty made it painfully evident that the country that benefitted the most from it was El Salvador, while Honduras would be destined to carry a heavy economic burden. Inevitably, it chilled the relations between the two countries and had a direct bearing in the treatment from the Hondurans towards the Salvadoran peasants. Amidst sporadic violence against the immigrant peasants, the two governments began negotiations aimed at solving the immigration problem and signed three agreements. However, while the negotiations were taking place, clandestine armed groups were organized in Honduras with the purpose of harassing and controlling the Salvadoran people living in that country. This situation was worsened by a coup d'etat that brought to the presidency the Honduran General Oswaldo Lopez Arellano, who had a very different point of view than his predecessor regarding the immigrants' situation. Shortly after, the expelling of thousands of Salvadorans began, which lead inevitably to war. "The 100 Hour War: The Conflict Between Honduras And El Salvador In July 1969" is backed by more than 20 years of research and deftly explores meticulously the actions undertaken by both countries in the air and on the ground during this short but intense confrontation, and that saw the last dogfights between World War II-era piston-engine aircraft in the world. Besides an impressive selection of photos, "The 100 Hour War" also features a section of color profiles and markings, and a set of tables detailing the identities of the aircraft operated by both countries during the conflict. Impressively informative, profusely illustrated, and an inherently fascinating read from beginning to end, "The 100 Hours War" is unreservedly recommended for personal, community, and academic library 20th Century Military History collections and supplemental studies reading lists.

Near the end of October 1941, a few hundred soldiers from New Brunswick were among the 1,975 Canadian troops who set sail from Vancouver to reinforce the British Colony of Hong Kong. Within two short months, after a hard-fought but disastrous battle against the Imperial Japanese Army, the island fell to the invaders on Christmas Day, and its defenders were ordered to surrender by the governor of Hong Kong. The survivors were taken captive. Based on the first-hand accounts of the author's father, Andrew "Ando" Flanagan, a rifleman from Jacquet River, NB, "The Endless Battle" explores the Battle of Hong Kong and its long aftermath, through the eyes of the soldiers. During their captivity, the POWs endured starvation, forced labor, and brutal beatings. They lived in deplorable conditions and many died from illness. But the soldiers stuck together, bound by their camaraderie, loyalty to King and Country, and collective desire to sabotage the Japanese war effort. Writing intimately and sensitively about the lingering effects of the trauma of the soldiers held in captivity, Andy Flanagan shows both the heroism of individual soldiers and the terrible costs of war in this unique and deftly written history. Impressively informative and inherently compelling, "The Endless Battle: The Fall of Hong Kong and Canadian POWs in Imperial Japan" is unreservedly recommended for both community and academic library World War II Military History collections. It should be noted for the personal reading lists of dedicated military buffs that "The Endless Battle" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $18.00).

Gerald Ambrose O'Reilly dropped out of Notre Dame at the height of World War II to join the Army and eventually became a member of the storied Tenth Mountain Division. Nine days after sailing from Hampton Roads, The Eighty-Fifth Infantry of the 10th Mountain Division arrived in Naples, Italy. Almost immediately, they were moved inland and began fighting. Their first major engagement was the taking of Mt. Belvedere, which had withstood two earlier assaults by the British and Brazilians. The 10th Mountain Division continued to fight their way northward crossing the Po River, finally making a dash across the Po Valley to keep the retreating German Army from escaping through the Alps. With victory in Europe and the dropping of the Atom Bomb on Japan, the Tenth Mountain Division returned to the states. "Nuns, Nazis, and Notre Dame" presents a biographical account of a life lived in 'interesting times' that includes a childhood during the years of the Great Depression, and a trolley-dodging, stickball kid from Brooklyn became part of a specialized group of mountain warriors, who triumphed over their German nemesis in the Alpines of Italy during a critical juncture of the Second World War. Occasionally illustrated throughout with black-and-white photography, "Nuns, Nazis, and Notre Dame" is an impressively informative and inherently fascinating memoir that is unreservedly recommended for personal reading lists, as well as community and academic library American Biography and World War II Military History collections.

In late January 1944 a force of New Zealand soldiers and Allied specialists undertook a daring behind the lines reconnaissance of the Japanese-held Green Islands of Papua New Guinea. The New Zealand Army's largest amphibious operation of World War II followed two weeks later. The Japanese contested the invasion with air power and inflicted heavy damage on the American cruiser USS St. Louis. After landing, the New Zealanders pushed inland and encountered fanatical Japanese defenders entrenched in thick jungle. Allied engineers including the famed Seabees then built airfields, roads and shipping facilities. The seizure of the Green Islands completed the encirclement of the main Japanese base in the South Pacific at Rabaul. A memorable but overlooked action of the Pacific War, Operation Squarepeg involved a diverse force of Allied sailors, soldiers and airmen that included Charles Lindbergh and future U.S. president Richard Nixon. An impressively researched and exemplary study, "Operation Squarepeg: The Allied Invasion of the Green Islands, February 1944" is exceptionally well written, organized and presented, making it an invaluable and seminal contribution to the growing library of World War II literature. While especially recommended for community and academic library World War II Military History collections, it should be noted for the personal reading lists of military history buffs that "Operation Squarepeg" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $18.99).

The Ashcan School was an artistic movement in the United States during the early 20th century that is best known for works portraying scenes of daily life in New York, often in the city's poorer neighborhoods. Some of the artists working in this style included Robert Henri (1865 - 1929), George Luks (1867 - 1933), William Glackens (1870 - 1938), John Sloan (1871 - 1951), and Everett Shinn (1876 - 1953), some of whom had met studying together under the renowned realist Thomas Anshutz at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and others of whom met in the newspaper offices of Philadelphia where they worked as illustrators. In "Beauty in the City: The Ashcan School" Robert A. Slayton (Henry Salvatori Professor of American Values and Traditions at Chapman University) deftly presents an informative and major new interpretation of the Ashcan School of Art, deftly arguing that these artists made the working class city at the turn of the century a subject for beautiful art. Beautifully and profusely illustrated throughout, "Beauty in the City: The Ashcan School" is an inherently fascinating read that is as original as it is informative. A compelling work of seminal scholarship, "Beauty in the City: The Ashcan School" is enhanced for academia with the inclusion of twelve pages of Notes, a ten page Bibliography, and a three page Index. Inevitably, twins experience life differently than singleton children. Growing up they are compared to each other in everything from athletics to academics. They encounter unique social issues (what happens when one child is invited to a social outing while her twin is not?). They can even have difficulty forming deep relationships outside of the twinship. Yet no previously published book on the subject of twins effectively helps parents navigate these unique emotional challenges until "Twinsight: How to Raise Confident, Emotionally Healthy Twins" by Dara Lovitz. This 'real world practical' instructional book bypasses the usual discussions on how to pay for two tuitions (a conundrum, to be sure!) and instead tackles deeper questions: How do you help twins feel like individuals? Should they be expected to be each other's caretaker? How can a parent avoid comparing? How can you encourage relationships outside the twinship? and more! Drawing on over seventy interviews with adult twins and their non-twin siblings, as well as expert insights from educators and psychologists and exhaustive research, author Dara Lovitz offers parents a definitive roadmap to raising emotionally healthy twins now and into the future. Impressively informative, deftly written, and thoroughly 'parent friendly' in organization and presentation, "Twinsight: How to Raise Confident, Emotionally Healthy Twins" is an extraordinary and highly recommended addition to personal, professional, community, and academic library Contemporary Parenting collections.

The late Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969) was a prominent member of the Frankfurt School, was one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century in the areas of social theory, philosophy and aesthetics. Precisely translated into English by Wieland Hoban, and deftly edited by Eberhard Ortland, "Aesthetics" is a volume of lectures given by Adorno on the subject of aesthetics in the winter semester of 1958 - 9, and which formed the foundation for his later "Aesthetic Theory" which is widely regarded as one of his greatest works. The lectures cover a wide range of topics, from an intense analysis of the work of Georg Lukacs to a sustained reflection on the theory of aesthetic experience, from an examination of works by Plato, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard and Benjamin, to a discussion of the latest experiments of John Cage, attesting to the virtuosity and breadth of Adorno's engagement. Originally designed as a cargo and paratroop transport during World War II, the Fairchild C-82 Packet is today mainly remembered for its starring role in the Hollywood film "The Flight of the Phoenix" (1965). Its ungainly appearance earned it the nickname the flying boxcar but the aircraft was the first to achieve practical end-loading and aerial delivery of cargoes. Its outsized capacity served the U.S. military's needs for more than ten years -- civilian operators flew it in remote locations like Alaska and South America for a further three decades. In the pages of "Fairchild C-82 Packet: The Military and Civil History" aviation historian Simon D. Beck ably provides a comprehensively informative history of the C-82, detailing each of the 224 aircraft built, with technical diagrams, multiple appendices and more than 200 black-and-white photos. The 1950s and 1960s saw a changing of the guard in London's gangland. A new and even more ruthless breed of criminal emerged to replace the aging generation of likes of Sabini, Mullins and Hayes. Protection rackets on bookies, club owners and shopkeepers were frequent. Prostitution and drugs offered rich pickings. Police corruption was all too commonplace. Thanks to media interest the names of Charlie Richardson, Mad Frankie Fraser, Scarface Smithson and the Nichols became as widely known as they were feared. And then there were the Kray Twins, whose notoriety and brutality became watchwords. "London's Gangs at War" by Dick Kirby (who joined the Metropolitan Police in 1967 and has spent half of his twenty-six years service with Scotland Yards' Serious Crime Squad and the Flying Squad) is a true insiders book that reveals the gangsters did not have it all their own way. In 1932-33, a famine - the Holodomor ("extermination by hunger") - raged through Ukraine, killing millions of men, women and children. Although the Soviet government denied it, news about the catastrophe got out. Canadians came to learn about the famine from many sources, though the reports were sometimes contradictory. Through an extensive analysis of the newspapers, political speeches, and protests, "Starving Ukraine: The Holodomor and Canada's Response" by Serge Cipko (Coordinator of the Ukrainian Diaspora Studies Initiative for the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton) deftly examines both Canada's reporting of the famine and the country's response to it, highlighting the importance of journalists and protestors.
